Ruth (Arel) Gerweck, aged 93, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on January 23, 2018. She was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, on May 6, 1924, the daughter of Paul J. and Viola M. Canton. Ruth wed Gerald Arel in August, 1942. They shared 47 years of marriage, relocating to Florida for 20 years, until his death in 1989. Ruth married Frank Gerweck in 1997 and continued to reside in Florida until his death in 2002. Ruth moved to Arlington, Texas, in 2005.

Ruth (Arel) Gerweck, aged 93, of Arlington, Texas, passed away on January 23, 2018. She was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, on May 6, 1924, the daughter of Paul J. and Viola M. Canton. Ruth wed Gerald Arel in August, 1942. They shared 47 years of marriage, relocating to Florida for 20 years, until his death in 1989. Ruth married Frank Gerweck in 1997 and continued to reside in Florida until his death in 2002. Ruth moved to Arlington, Texas, in 2005.

Ruth is survived by her brother, Donald H. Canton of Arlington, and several nieces and nephews, scattered across the United States, all of whom she considered her surrogate children. Ruth was preceded in death by her husbands, parents and brother, Paul J. Canton, Jr.

In her youth, Ruth enjoyed water skiing, swimming, ice skating, sight-seeing, attending stock car races and mentoring her nieces, nephews and younger brother. In maturity, she developed skills at painting landscapes, doing needlepoint, playing shuffleboard, learning and playing several different games of cards with great skill, conducting charity bazaars and assisting with community bingo games. Ruth was an avid traveler, logging in excess of 20 cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii and the Canadian Maritime Provinces. Ruth was competitive to her core, true to her faith, loyal as a friend and truly a loving wife, sister and aunt.

Her life will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Arlington, Texas at 10am on February 1, 2018. Interment will be in Northampton, Massachusetts, by the side of her husband Gerald.
